Update: Transforming Education in El Salvador
Secretary general of El Salvador’s oldest teacher’s union, ANDES 21 de Junio, Israel Montano Osorio and PARCEO’s Donna Nevel spoke Wednesday night to a filled room at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (KJCC) Auditorium at NYU. Israel spoke about the exciting developments taking place around education in El Salvador under the new government. They are deeply committed to a liberatory education system that serves all its citizens, and they recognize that a just education system is interconnected with economic and social justice. Donna spoke about a very different system that we have in the US today with the corporatization of public education and a system that does not recognize public education as a human right for all–but she also spoke to the amazing organizing and resistance that is going on across the country, led by young people, parents, educators, and those committed to a just education system–and she spoke of how inspiring the work that Israel described was to all of us fighting for justice. NYU graduate student Shirley Lavareda served as the evening’s moderator.
